Joel Woods · Candidate for San Ramon Valley School Board

What’s Best for Our Students Comes First

Every decision made by the School Board should begin with a simple question:

What is best for our students?

My priorities are focused on protecting the academic excellence of SRVUSD, supporting the educators who make that excellence possible, using public resources responsibly, and ensuring every student has a safe and supportive environment in which to learn and succeed.

MY COMMITMENT TO OUR SCHOOLS

Protecting and Enhancing Academic Excellence

Our students deserve a rigorous, balanced education that prepares them for college, vocational careers, and an evolving global economy.

  • Protect core academic fundamentals and maintain the high educational standards our community expects from SRVUSD.
  • Expand access to advanced coursework, STEM, humanities, and practical skill development so students have multiple pathways to success.
  • Give teachers a meaningful voice in curriculum and instructional decisions, recognizing their firsthand classroom experience and professional expertise.
  • Ensure every student has the tools and support to succeed, including students who need special education, English language learning, or other individualized services.

Ensuring Fiscal Accountability and Classroom Priorities

Parents and taxpayers trust the district to manage public resources effectively. Every dollar should be evaluated by how it supports our schools and students.

  • Prioritize classroom instruction, including teachers, manageable class sizes, instructional resources, and essential educational programs.
  • Protect critical student support services, including special education, counselors, paraprofessionals, nurses, librarians, and other staff who directly support students.
  • Actively pursue additional funding and grant opportunities at the local, state, federal, and private levels rather than relying only on existing revenue sources.
  • Provide transparency and accountability by clearly communicating spending decisions, financial tradeoffs, and how district resources benefit students.

Supporting Teachers and Staff

Great schools begin with great educators. Having worked within local classrooms, I understand how important it is for teachers and staff to feel supported, respected, and properly resourced.

  • Recruit and retain high-quality educators by keeping compensation and benefits competitive with neighboring districts.
  • Maintain manageable class sizes and protect teacher preparation time so educators have the time and capacity to give students the attention they need.
  • Reduce unnecessary workload and provide stronger professional support, including mentorship, reliable substitute coverage, and more efficient administrative processes.
  • Build a collaborative working environment where teachers and staff have a meaningful voice and regular communication with district and Board leadership.

Fostering Community Collaboration and Transparent Leadership

School Board decisions should reflect the needs of the students and community the district serves. That requires listening before decisions are made, not simply communicating afterward.

  • Maintain open and transparent communication with parents, educators, students, staff, local businesses, and residents.
  • Create meaningful opportunities for community input so people can raise concerns, share ideas, and participate in conversations affecting their schools.
  • Make decision-making understandable and accountable, including clearly explaining difficult choices and the reasoning behind them.
  • Build collaborative relationships across the district, even when people disagree, while keeping the best interests of SRVUSD students and families at the center.

Your Voice Matters

The best decisions start with listening. I want to hear directly from parents, students, teachers, staff, and community members about what is working, what needs attention, and what you want for the future of SRVUSD.

Your experiences and ideas can help shape better decisions for our schools.
